Elizabeth Olsen Open to Returning as Scarlet Witch but Acknowledges Superhero Fatigue

Elizabeth Olsen says she’s “always ready” to reprise her role as Wanda Maximoff, a.k.a. Scarlet Witch, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe — but she also recognizes that audiences might be feeling some superhero fatigue.
Speaking at the 2025 Hamptons International Film Festival during the “A Conversation With…” series on Saturday, Oct. 4, Olsen reflected on her decade-long journey as Wanda, noting that there are still storylines from the comics she hopes to explore.
“It is something that I love, and it’s something I always want to return to,” she said. “There are still character through lines that have happened in the comics that I’d love to do that I think fans also want to.”
Olsen, 36, acknowledged that while superhero movies can sometimes feel culturally overexposed, they also offer a unique sense of continuity and family for those involved.
“Some people have ongoing television series that they get to return to. Very few, I feel like, get to be a part of franchises that, I know we might culturally get a little bit exhausted by, but there is something about them that becomes very familial,” she said.
Reflecting on her start in the franchise and her Emmy-nominated performance in the 2021 limited series WandaVision, Olsen emphasized the creative satisfaction that comes with exploring a complex character over multiple projects.
“It’s really fruitful, and the stories have only gotten better for me, my character. I really enjoyed it,” she said.
Olsen also discussed her approach to fostering a positive environment on set. She emphasized the importance of respect and healthy creative debate.
“For it to be a bad atmosphere is not cool. When you’re a producer, or even when you’re not and you’re the lead actor, you are allowed to set the tone,” she said. “Creative arguments are delicious, and debates are great. But you can only really do that in a healthy way coming from a place of respect.”
The conversation also highlighted Olsen’s latest project, the A24 rom-com Eternity, which opened the festival on Friday, Oct. 3. In the film, she plays Joan, who faces an impossible afterlife choice between the man she spent her life with and her first love, who died decades earlier. The film also stars Miles Teller, Callum Turner, John Early, Olga Merediz, and Da’Vine Joy Randolph, and is directed by David Freyne. Eternity is set to hit theaters on Nov. 26.
