Tina Turner, the legendary Queen of Rock ’n’ Roll known for her fiery voice and unstoppable spirit, surprised fans worldwide in 2013 when she officially gave up her U.S. citizenship. While many assumed politics played a role, Turner later revealed that her decision was deeply personal — a choice for peace and freedom.
“It had nothing to do with politics,” she explained in a later interview. “I was choosing peace over pressure.”
After decades of living in the spotlight, Turner found solace in Switzerland, where she settled with longtime partner—and later husband—Erwin Bach.
“In Switzerland, I could walk down the street without bodyguards, without cameras, without anyone shouting my name,” she shared. “I could just be Tina—or sometimes, just Anna Mae.”
The move marked a new chapter for Turner, who had spent years enduring the demands of fame, first during her challenging early career with Ike Turner, and then as a solo superstar with hits like Private Dancer and What’s Love Got to Do with It. Though her success fulfilled many dreams, serenity was not among them.
“I had spent my whole life fighting—for love, for freedom, for respect,” she said. “When I found peace here, I wasn’t going to give it up for anything.”
Turner often expressed affection for Swiss traditions—the quiet Sundays, peaceful walks along Lake Zurich, and the simple greeting of “Grüezi.”
“There’s something beautiful about a place where success doesn’t make you special—kindness does,” she said with a smile.
Friends say the decision to become a Swiss citizen was transformative.
“She finally stopped running,” a longtime collaborator recalled. “In Switzerland, Tina found the stillness she’d been chasing her whole life.”
Reflecting on the change, Turner said, “America gave me my voice. But Switzerland gave me my silence—and I needed that more than anything.”
Though she passed away in 2023, Tina Turner’s journey—from the powerhouse who ignited stages worldwide to the woman who found peace in the Alps—continues to inspire fans everywhere.
In her own words: “I didn’t leave America. I just went where my heart could rest.”
For Tina Turner, renouncing her American citizenship was not rejection, but release—the ultimate encore in a life lived fully on her own terms.
