No NCAA, No Problem: Meet the Canadian QB Breaking Into Green Bay!

In a league that lives and breathes NCAA football, breaking into the NFL without a college pedigree from the United States is nearly unheard of. But Taylor Elgersma, a quarterback from London, Ontario, is proving that talent doesn’t need a Division I label. In 2025, Elgersma became one of the few Canadian quarterbacks ever to earn a shot in the NFL—and he did it without ever playing a single NCAA snap.

Elgersma’s football journey began late. He was a hockey defenseman growing up and didn’t throw a football until 10th grade. But once he did, the transformation was rapid. He joined Wilfrid Laurier University and quickly made a name for himself in Canadian collegiate football. His height, intelligence, and powerful arm allowed him to dominate the U Sports league, rewriting school records and drawing attention beyond the Canadian border.

In his senior season, Elgersma delivered a masterclass performance: 4,011 passing yards, 34 touchdowns, and a 73.5% completion rate. He also added seven rushing touchdowns, showing off his versatility and pocket toughness. His leadership helped the Golden Hawks reach an 11-1 record and a trip to the Vanier Cup. For his efforts, he was awarded the 2024 Hec Crighton Trophy, U Sports’ most prestigious individual honor.

The real turning point came in early 2025, when Elgersma became the first U Sports quarterback ever invited to the Senior Bowl. On a stage filled with elite NCAA talent, he held his own—completing four of seven passes for 57 yards and showing composure under pressure. NFL scouts took notice. One of them was Jason Vrable, the Packers’ quarterbacks coach.

Green Bay had tracked Elgersma closely, attending his pro day at the University at Buffalo and bringing him in for a top-30 visit. Head coach Matt LaFleur publicly praised his arm talent and rapid development, highlighting Elgersma’s high ceiling. At 6’5” and 227 pounds, the Canadian quarterback has the size NFL teams covet, combined with a sharp football mind and an underdog’s hunger.

Despite being drafted by the CFL’s Winnipeg Blue Bombers and receiving a minicamp invite from the Buffalo Bills, Elgersma committed to Green Bay, choosing to chase the NFL dream full-time. His story represents a new path—one forged by work ethic, adaptability, and belief.

Taylor Elgersma may not have played in the SEC or Big Ten, but his journey is just as compelling. With every snap, he challenges the belief that the NCAA is the only gateway to the NFL. Green Bay might have found an overlooked gem—not from Alabama or Ohio State—but from the frozen fields of Ontario.
