Tom Hardy has become a household name in recent years, thanks to his roles in films like Venom and Inception, as well as his critically acclaimed performances in Dunkirk and Mad Max: Fury Road. But it’s his role in the 2017 period drama Taboo that has left many fans eagerly awaiting a follow-up. Despite the series’ success and the promise of a second season, it has taken a staggering eight years for Hardy to finally confirm that work on Taboo Season 2 is underway.

Taboo, co-created by Hardy, Steven Knight (creator of Peaky Blinders), and Hardy’s father, Edward “Chips” Hardy, follows James Keziah Delaney (played by Hardy), a man who returns to London during the War of 1812 to rebuild his late father’s shipping empire. The first season aired to critical acclaim, with its dark, atmospheric storytelling and Hardy’s gripping performance as the enigmatic Delaney.

But what has taken so long for the much-anticipated second season to materialize? According to Hardy, the answer is simple: “I’ve been busy.”

Hardy elaborated on the long wait in a recent interview with MovieWeb, stating, “So, Taboo is something that’s for me and my family and Steven. It’s something we wanted to take time to do properly. I’ve been working for the last seven years on Venom, so it had to take a little bit of a back seat, but it’s something that I’m very passionate about. So when I have the space properly to commit, I’d revisit properly. So it’s never been something that we didn’t want to do. It’s a question of when, and doing it properly.”

This revelation may offer some solace to Taboo fans who have been waiting years for the show’s return. Hardy, who has kept a packed schedule with major blockbuster roles in the Venom franchise, clearly values Taboo as a project that requires careful attention and dedication. His commitment to the series reflects the depth of his passion for the character and the world he helped create.

As for the future of Taboo, Hardy is also excited about the possibility of his current MobLand co-star, Paddy Considine, joining the cast of Season 2. Hardy remarked, “I hope so. That would be great.” Fans of both actors will likely be eager to see how their on-screen chemistry could play out in the gritty world of Taboo.

While Taboo fans will have to be patient for the next chapter, Hardy is keeping busy in the meantime with his new crime drama series, MobLand, which airs on Paramount+. The show, which also stars Pierce Brosnan and Helen Mirren, is a collaboration between Ronan Bennett, Jez Butterworth, and Guy Ritchie. New episodes debut Sundays, with the finale set to air on June 1. Hardy serves as both the star and executive producer of the series, which has garnered attention for its star-studded cast and compelling narrative.

As Hardy continues to juggle multiple projects, fans can take comfort in the fact that Taboo Season 2 is finally on the horizon. And while Hardy has kept his reasons for the eight-year wait close to his chest, it’s clear that the delay wasn’t due to a lack of desire or passion for the project. Rather, it was about ensuring that when the time was right, the next chapter of James Keziah Delaney’s story would be worth the wait.

For now, Hardy remains focused on MobLand, but as the world of Taboo slowly begins to take shape once more, fans can only hope that it won’t be long before they see their favorite rogue adventurer back on screen once again.
