Packers and Fans Mourn the Loss of Tom Brown – A Hero Who Helped Build Green Bay’s Legacy

The Green Bay Packers are mourning the loss of Tom Brown, a key figure in the team’s storied history, who passed away at the age of 84. Brown, a tough and versatile safety, was a vital part of the Packers’ dominance during the Vince Lombardi era, contributing to their NFL Championships in the 1960s and both Super Bowls I and II.

Drafted by the Packers in the second round of the 1964 NFL Draft out of the University of Maryland, Brown quickly became one of the cornerstones of the team’s defense. Known for his hard-hitting style and sharp football instincts, Brown played in 71 games, starting 54 of them. He recorded 13 career interceptions, including a memorable 31-yard pick-six against the St. Louis Cardinals in 1966. His ability to disrupt opposing offenses and cover ground in the defensive backfield earned him a spot on the Packers’ 50th Anniversary Team, cementing his place in franchise history.

Brown was more than just a football player. In addition to his NFL career, he also spent eight seasons playing first base in Major League Baseball, primarily with the Washington Senators. This dual-sport career underscored his athleticism, but it was his role in football that brought him national acclaim as part of the Packers’ championship runs.

After retiring from football in 1969, Brown briefly returned to baseball before finding his true calling as an educator. He worked as a high school teacher and coach in the Washington, D.C. area, impacting the lives of young athletes long after his playing days were over.

Described as a devoted family man, Brown is survived by his wife, three children, and extended family. The Packers, led by President Mark Murphy, expressed deep sorrow, calling Brown a true Packer who embodied the toughness and spirit of the Lombardi era. His contributions to the team’s success and his character will never be forgotten, leaving a lasting impact on the franchise and its fans.
