Patrick Mahomes’ New Haircut Draws Criticism—But His Baby Joke Steals the Show

On April 23, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes debuted a brand-new, shorter haircut during an interview with KCTV 5. The change marked a departure from his signature curly style, which had become part of his recognizable image. Explaining the decision, Mahomes admitted, “I’ve wanted to do it for a while, but it was kind of one of those superstitions. I kept winning the Super Bowl, which is a good thing, but I didn’t want to cut the hair while I was doing it.”

Mahomes continued, “I told everybody during the season that win or lose—whether we win three in a row or if we lose—I’m getting a haircut. Like, that’s enough.” Looking back at his old hairstyle, he added with a laugh, “I’ve watched some videos from last year and I can’t believe you all let me keep that nappy hair for so long. I look way better now with the short hair, so I’ll be keeping this going forward.”

While many fans praised the fresh cut, others took issue with Mahomes’ use of the term “nappy,” which has historically been used as a derogatory descriptor for natural Black hair. Given Mahomes’ biracial identity, the comment sparked an online debate about racial sensitivity and the power of language. Critics argued the term reinforced harmful stereotypes, while supporters dismissed it as a harmless joke.

Still, Mahomes lightened the mood with a playful remark that resonated with many parents. When asked whether the haircut reflected lifestyle changes or upcoming projects, he quipped, “Honestly, with a newborn at home, I needed a haircut that wouldn’t scare the baby at 3 a.m.” The joke was a nod to the recent birth of his third child, Golden Raye Mahomes, born January 12, 2025.

Golden joined big sister Sterling Skye, born in 2021, and brother Patrick “Bronze” Lavon Mahomes III, born in 2022. Mahomes and wife Brittany announced their daughter’s arrival with a black-and-white Instagram post featuring Golden’s tiny feet beside a wooden name plaque—a post that quickly went viral.

Despite online controversy, Mahomes remains focused on what matters most: football, fatherhood, and keeping his sense of humor. His new look may have sparked debate, but his proud dad energy continues to shine just as brightly.
