Mahomes Didn’t Just Get a Receiver—He Got a Fighter Named Jalen Royals

The Kansas City Chiefs drafted Jalen Royals for his hands, his speed, and his separation. But what they really got—was fight.
Royals isn’t your typical rookie. His story isn’t filled with five-star rankings or early endorsements. It’s filled with 5 a.m. workouts, makeshift meals, and long nights wondering if anyone would give him a shot.
“I’ve never been the flashy guy,” he said. “I’ve always been the grinder.”
He battled through junior college, often sleeping in his car between classes and practices. He showed up early, left late, and stayed silent. Utah State took a chance. Royals turned it into gold: 1,200+ yards, 12 touchdowns, and the respect of every cornerback in the Mountain West.
But NFL scouts? Many still doubted him. That only made him hungrier.
When Kansas City called his name at pick 131, Royals didn’t celebrate. He suited up. And when Mahomes called him after the draft, he knew this was more than football. This was purpose.
“He plays like he’s fighting for something more,” said a Chiefs assistant coach. “Because he is.”
Royals doesn’t just run routes. He runs like his past is chasing him—and every yard is earned. He’s physical, focused, and fearless across the middle.
Mahomes noticed instantly.
“You can’t coach that kind of hunger,” Mahomes said. “You either have it or you don’t.”
Jalen Royals has it.
And now, Kansas City has him.
