Eagles Still Exposed: Major Defensive Hole After 2025 Draft

The Philadelphia Eagles entered the 2025 NFL Draft with a mission: rebuild key units, inject young talent, and close the gap that prevented a Super Bowl run in 2024. On paper, they succeeded. They added depth across the offensive line, secured promising defenders, and snagged a high-upside cornerback in Mac McWilliams. But one pressing concern still looms large—and it could prove costly if not addressed.
The safety position remains a major question mark. With the departure of C.J. Gardner-Johnson and little veteran experience left in the secondary, the Eagles are dangerously thin in one of the most pivotal areas of modern NFL defenses. The position demands a quarterback-like presence on the field—someone who can read offenses, adjust coverages, and lead communication across the back end. Right now, that voice is missing.
Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio is known for complex schemes that rely on smart, disciplined safeties. Without a proven leader back there, the unit risks miscommunication, blown coverages, and vulnerability against deep threats—something that plagued the Eagles late last season. Despite drafting multiple defensive backs, none bring the type of leadership or experience needed immediately.
Rumors have already begun to swirl about Philadelphia eyeing free-agent veteran Justin Simmons, formerly of the Denver Broncos. Simmons, a two-time Pro Bowler, would instantly upgrade the back end with his instincts, ball skills, and locker room presence. The question is: will the front office make the move, or will they gamble on youth and potential?
General Manager Howie Roseman has never shied away from bold mid-offseason acquisitions. But with cap space shrinking and expectations mounting, timing is everything. If the Eagles want to compete with NFC juggernauts like the 49ers and Lions, they can’t afford weak links in the secondary.
One hole can sink a ship—and this one might be bigger than fans realize. With the clock ticking and training camp on the horizon, all eyes are on Philadelphia’s next move.
