Not Rivals, But Shields—DeJean & Mitchell’s Unbreakable Rookie Bond

In a league built on competition, Cooper DeJean and Quinyon Mitchell chose brotherhood. Both drafted in 2024 to boost Philadelphia’s struggling secondary, many assumed they’d fight for the same spotlight. Instead, they forged an unbreakable bond—and became a dual force that changed the trajectory of the Eagles’ defense.

“We joked about it at rookie minicamp,” Mitchell said. “Like, ‘Hey, may the best man win.’ But then we realized, we win better together.”

While the coaching staff expected sharp competition, what unfolded was collaboration. The two rookies began breaking down film together, pushing each other during reps, and constantly swapping notes during games.

“There were times he’d yell across the field—‘watch the out route!’—and he was always right,” DeJean smiled. “It’s like we were syncing mentally.”

By midseason, Philadelphia’s defense went from being ranked 25th in EPA/play to the top of the NFL. Both rookies were credited with crucial stops, and each had at least one game-saving play during the stretch. The coaching staff dubbed them “The Shields.”

“That nickname means a lot,” Mitchell said. “It’s not just about blocking passes. It’s about protecting each other.”

Their relationship was on full display during Super Bowl LIX. After DeJean’s pick-six, Mitchell was the first to meet him in the end zone. “He screamed louder than I did,” DeJean laughed. “That was our moment.”

Now, both are nominated for Defensive Rookie of the Year, but don’t expect ego to break them apart.

“We’ll be at the ceremony,” Mitchell said, “rooting for each other louder than anyone else in the room.”
