These Four Post-Draft Questions Could Make or Break the Chiefs’ 2025 Season – Who Will Step Up
OPINION: This article may contain commentary which reflects the author's opinion.
1. Who Will Stop the Opponent’s Running Game?
After losing Derrick Nnadi and Tershawn Wharton in free agency, the Chiefs face a massive gap in their interior defensive line. They re-signed 33-year-old Mike Pennel and added Jerry Tillery, but neither has stood out in run defense.
Rookie Omarr Norman-Lott, selected in the second round, is primarily a pass-rush specialist and has yet to prove himself as a reliable run-stopper. With AFC West teams strengthening their ground attacks, the Chiefs must improve their run defense to stay competitive.
2. What Will Happen to the Left Side of the Offensive Line?
The departure of All-Pro guard Joe Thuney has weakened the left side of the offensive line. Kingsley Suamataia is expected to take over at left guard but lacks experience. Meanwhile, Jaylon Moore is projected to start at left tackle, but he also has limited playing time.
Rookie Josh Simmons has the potential to become a long-term solution at left tackle, but he is recovering from an injury and will need time to adapt. The lack of stability on the left side could impact the offense’s effectiveness.
3. How Will the Skill Positions Perform?
The Chiefs’ offense lacked explosive plays in 2024, even with Xavier Worthy in the lineup. Injuries to Rashee Rice and Hollywood Brown affected their ability to create big plays. The team relied on JuJu Smith-Schuster, DeAndre Hopkins, and Kareem Hunt, but their impact was limited.
The addition of players like Jalen Royals and Elijhah Badger brings new hope, but they will need time to integrate and become effective within the offensive system.
4. Who Will Replace Travis Kelce?
Despite being one of the top tight ends in the league, Travis Kelce’s age and the heavy workload he has carried for years raise questions about his ability to maintain peak performance. The Chiefs must prepare a long-term replacement plan.
Rookie Jake Briningstool is expected to learn from Kelce and gradually take on a significant role. However, finding a worthy successor to Kelce remains a major challenge for the team.
