Hollywood Brown on the Brink of a Trade – Will Chiefs Training Camp Be His Final Test?

Just months after joining the Kansas City Chiefs, veteran wide receiver Marquise “Hollywood” Brown finds himself at the center of trade rumors—and with training camp approaching, the pressure is mounting. Is the former first-round pick fighting for his spot on the roster? Some believe Chiefs training camp could be his final test.
Brown signed a one-year deal with the Chiefs in early 2025, looking for a fresh start after an injury-plagued 2024 season that saw him appear in only five games. The plan seemed simple: add speed and experience to help Patrick Mahomes return to the Super Bowl. But things have changed quickly.
The team used a mid-round draft pick on rookie receiver Jalen Royals, a rising talent known for his vertical playmaking ability. His early flashes in rookie minicamp have already stirred speculation that Brown could be the odd man out. Pro Football Network reported, “There’s a scenario where Royals adds a vertical contested catch element that Brown can’t replicate, squeezing Hollywood out of the rotation yet again.”
The report sparked debate across social media and sports talk shows. Fans and analysts alike are questioning whether the Chiefs would truly part ways with a veteran before he’s had a chance to develop chemistry with Mahomes. But with Rashee Rice, rookie Xavier Worthy, and the ever-reliable Travis Kelce already ahead of him on the depth chart, Brown’s window to make an impact is rapidly shrinking.
Making matters more complicated, trading Brown wouldn’t even help the Chiefs financially. According to Over the Cap, dealing him before or after June 1 would leave Kansas City with $3 million in dead money—hardly an incentive to move a player they signed to bolster the offense.
Still, the NFL is a business, and in Kansas City, competition is fierce. Training camp will be Hollywood Brown’s opportunity to prove he deserves to stay. Coaches will be watching closely to see if he can stay healthy, regain his explosiveness, and earn a role in one of the league’s most demanding offensive systems.
To his credit, Brown hasn’t flinched in the face of speculation. In a March 2025 interview with ESPN, he said, “The atmosphere every day coming to work just felt like for the first time in my career I was getting where I wanted to be… So I knew that was a place and environment I wanted to stay in.”
Now, he’ll need to show that same determination on the field. Training camp isn’t just about conditioning and drills—it’s about survival. And for Hollywood Brown, it could be a make-or-break moment in his career.
If he shines, he’ll silence the trade talk and earn his role in Kansas City’s high-powered offense. But if he struggles, the Chiefs may not wait until Week 1 to make a tough decision.
One thing’s for sure: all eyes will be on No. 5 when camp opens.
