Eagles in Chaos? 5 Starting Jobs Still Wide Open as Camp Heats Up!

With the 2025 NFL season fast approaching, the Philadelphia Eagles find themselves in a state of fierce internal competition. While the roster boasts elite talent across the board, five key starting positions remain up for grabs as training camp reaches a boiling point. For a franchise aiming to return to Super Bowl contention, these unresolved battles raise questions—and excitement—about who will rise to the top.

1. Right Guard: Youth vs. Power

Perhaps the most heated battle is unfolding at right guard. Tyler Steen, a 2023 draft pick, has impressed with his athleticism and technique, making him the early favorite. But Mekhi Becton, the massive former first-round tackle turned guard, is pushing hard. Becton’s strength is undeniable, yet his inexperience at the position could be his downfall. Veteran Matt Hennessy also lurks in the background, offering versatility and a high football IQ. Consistency and cohesion with the rest of the line will be the deciding factors.

2. Cornerback: A Star in the Making?

Opposite Darius Slay, the Eagles are still searching for their starting outside cornerback. Quinyon Mitchell, the team’s first-round pick in 2024, has shown incredible instincts and speed. However, Kelee Ringo isn’t going down without a fight. The second-year player has bulked up and refined his coverage technique. While Avonte Maddox remains a reliable slot option, defensive coordinator Vic Fangio is looking for someone who can play inside and out. The winner must excel in multiple roles in an evolving defensive scheme.

3. Linebacker: Battle Beside Dean

Nakobe Dean is the clear leader in the linebacker room, but who lines up next to him is still uncertain. Zack Baun’s speed and coverage ability have made him the frontrunner, but Ben VanSumeren’s aggressive play and athletic upside make him a dark horse. Don’t count out rookie Jeremiah Trotter Jr., whose football pedigree and instincts are impossible to ignore. Coverage skills will likely tip the scale here.

4. Third Wide Receiver: A Crowded Race

With A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith entrenched as the top two targets, the battle for WR3 is still wide open. Jahan Dotson offers polished route-running and speed but has yet to build chemistry with Jalen Hurts. Britain Covey has flashed potential in the slot, and 6’7” rookie Johnny Wilson could become a red-zone nightmare. Offensive coordinator Kellen Moore might rotate this role early, but someone will need to seize it.

5. Safety: Who’s the Third Man?

The top duo of C.J. Gardner-Johnson and Reed Blankenship is set, but the third safety in big nickel packages remains uncertain. Sydney Brown is back from injury and plays with fearless aggression, while Tristin McCollum’s ball skills are turning heads. With Fangio’s love for three-safety looks, this position could prove more impactful than expected.

As preseason looms, head coach Nick Sirianni has made one thing clear: nothing is guaranteed. “The best players will play—period.” The chaos of camp might just be the crucible the Eagles need to forge their next breakout stars.
